A day hike to the summit of
Mt.Furmanov (3850m, 12,631 feet) begins from Medeo skating rink along Kimasar Gorge. It’s unnecessary to have special mountaineering skills, but the route is long and required hard physical work and early start. The mountain is named for Dmitry Furmanov (1891-1926). Komissarov Gorge and Komissarov pass are also named for Furmanov, who was the commissar of the Chapayev Division, a writer, and the head of the revolutionary Military Council on the Turkestan front in 1920. While in Verny (as Almaty was called until 1921), he ordered the creation of a sanatorium at Medeo where injured Red Army soldiers could recuperate and be treated with kumys (horses milk). The way goes along the Kimasar River. Just after crossing a second bridge, we come to into an open space, and the trail divides: one trail continues along the gorge, eventually Butakovsky Pass; the other trail tuns to the eastern slope and winds its way gradually u to the ridge. We got left, the grade increases, becoming quite steep in places. Below we see the Kimasar River, to the left a deep ravine that makes a good ski trail. After another half-hour of hiking, we come quite unexpectedly upon a hut, that was built in 1960 by a group of avid skiers. Having rested at the hut, we continue our hike along the ridge. After about 25 minutes, the trail meets another trail, which leads to Butakovsky Pass. From there, a well-defined trail leads to the summit of Mt.Furmanov. We have panoramic view from the summit. To the south looms Trudoviye Reservy Peak. To the east we see the saddle of Butakovsky Pass and formidable ridges of the Talgar watershed.
