Medeu skating rink

Medeu is the high altitude skating rink (1,700 m ) It is situated in the valley of Malaya Almatinka river and surrounded by mountains on all sides – Kimasar to the west, Kabyrgatau to the east and Kumbel to the south-east. Medeu is a popular place with locals and visitors alike. The ice rink was built in 1972 in picturesque gorge 16 km outside Almaty. The mild climate, optimum level of sunshine, low pressure, calm weather and ice made from the purest spring water make Medeu one of the world’s top skating rinks, while its setting makes it perhaps the most beautiful. The 10,500-sq.m ice rink is the perfect venue for outdoor international competitions in speed skating, figure skating and ice hokey. Over 120 world records have been set here (compared with 40 in Davos) by the world’s top skaters. The ice rink is open to the public between November and March, and skates are available for hire. Another must-see for tourists is the dam constructed in the Malaya Almatinka valley to protect Almaty from floods. The dam actually saved the city from potentially fatal flood in 1973. The walk up 830 steps to the dike is highly recommended, as once you reach the top there are magnificent views of the Zaili Alatau peaks. Once a year Medeu hosts the international Aziya Dauysy (Voice of Asia) pop festival, which has become a highlight of Kazakstan’s musical life. There are plenty places to eat and stay up in the mountains. We recommend the traditional dishes at the Kazakh Aul restaurant, designed in the form of a yurt. Now there is reconstruction of the parking lot, hotel near the skating rink. The new lift  connects Medeu and Chimbulak ski resort.
